Steve wandered through the house as he searched for Danny. Twenty-five years together and he still never knew where he would find Danny after coming home. He sighed as he stopped in the hallway. Steve listened closely for any movement in the house. When he realized there was nothing but silence to greet him inside the house, he walked outside to the lanai. He closed the door behind him and smiled as everyone yelled “surprise”. Steve said hello to the guests and stood beside Danny. “Hi Babe.”
“Hi Steve.” Danny looked at him and smiled. “It took longer for you to find me than I thought it might. I said you'd come right out here with a beer in your hand.” He checked Steve's hands before he continued. “I was wrong on both counts. You went through the house, didn't you?”
“Here.” Danny said as he handed Steve a glass.
“Just drink it and be happy.”
“Yes sir.” Steve chuckled and took a sip. “Nice cocktail. You have improved.”
“Thank you.” Danny turned toward his daughter. “Make me another one of those, please?”
“Hey, she made this?” Steve asked as he raised his glass.
Danny nodded and grinned. “You know I can't mix a drink the way you like it.”
“Thank you, Grace.” He closed the distance between them before he opened his arms to her.
Grace hugged Steve and said, “you're welcome, Dad.”
Steve held on tight to Grace and was reluctant to let her go.
“Dad, you need to let go so I can make one for Danno, okay?” She giggled.
Steve grinned as he let her go. “Okay, okay.” He watched her walk over to the bar where she made a drink for her father.
“So, did you figure out what had the lady so angry and calling the Governor?” Danny asked as he checked the food on the grill.
Steve walked back to Danny and answered, “Yeah. Seems someone forgot to remove a sign after emptying a pond and refilling it with dirt. She went there years ago with her dogs and when she saw the sign was still there, she lost it because her dogs are gone and I don't know. Called every police station she could in the state, not caring which island, and then she started in on the calls to the governor. Steve stood beside his love, watched him flip the food around on the grill and wondered how his life turned out this perfect. “Everything looks good.”
“Or do I need to thank Grace for the food as well?”
“No, Steven. I am the one grilling. I even threw the vegetables on here for you.” Danny grinned before he turned to give Steve a kiss. “I love you.”
“I love you too.” Steve paused before he added, “happy anniversary.”
“Happy anniversary, Babe.” Danny smiled. “Now, go enjoy yourself with our friends and family so I can get this food ready. “Danny gently pushed Steve toward their guests and smiled at the fact he couldn't imagine being any happier with his life.
