Author's Note: I wrote this, reread it and thought I might have just written this already. I sort of wrote it but it was through Steve's thoughts and this time, it's Danny's turn. No beta other than the hemingway app and the free grammarly app.
"Why can't you tell him you love him?"
"I tell him all the time. And he tells me."
"What?" He tried to pretend he didn't understand.
"I mean, why can't you tell Uncle Steve that you are in love with him? And that you miss him." She placed her hands on her hips and waited.
Danny had no idea how to respond. "Well, I, we, I mean, I say I love you to Steve." He sighed. "It's complicated."
"Ugh!" She threw her hands in the air and in that moment he knew, without a doubt, she was his daughter.
Danny looked at Grace and asked, "why are you so angry with me?"
"Because you don't get it. You won't listen or open your eyes and you're still with Amber."
"No, I'm not."
"Not with Amber."
Her eyes lit up and she smiled. "So, you can tell Uncle Steve you're in love with him!"
"No, I can't."
"You love him." Grace stated.
"I know you are in love with him and he is in love with you. You just need to tell him." Grace stomped off to her room and hoped her father would listen to her.
Danny couldn't sleep. He kept hearing his daughter's words over and over in his head. So what if he was in love with Steve. That certainly didn't mean Steve was in love with him. Danny fell asleep and overslept.
"No" he grumbled when he saw the time. Danny got out of bed and stumbled to the bathroom. After he got dressed he was trying to button his shirt on the way to the kitchen and realized he had it on inside out. "This better be the worse thing that happens to me today." He grabbed a bottle of water and headed to work.
“Sir, it was a small fire in your kitchen. Luckily, you have sprinklers in your home and they did their job.”
Danny stood dumbfounded in his office. He turned toward the door and saw Steve as he continued the phone conversation. “Thank you” he said once he understood everything and ended the call.
Steve was standing at the door when Danny said goodbye. “What happened?”
“Fire. Kitchen” was all he said.
“What? A fire? How bad?”
“Not bad. Great sprinklers. Thanks for the advice on that.”
Steve wrapped Danny in his arms and hugged him. “Stay with me.”
"I've got this. You go outside and relax."
Danny grabbed a beer and walked outside. He sighed as he opened the bottle and took a swig of beer.
Steve finished with the dishes and grabbed the rest of the six pack from the refrigerator. He walked outside, saw Danny by the water, and joined him.
"Thanks." Danny took a beer from Steve and let out a sigh. "I never thought I would say this but I feel better."
"It's the ocean." Steve said as he nudged Danny and grinned.
Danny turned toward Steve and said, "no, it's all you, Babe."
Steve thought they were watching the water but Danny had a plan. He was waiting for the right moment and decided the sunset would be a perfect moment. He took a deep breath and spoke. "I've missed you."
Steve glanced at Danny and smiled as he focused on the setting sun. "And I've missed you."
The sky changed as Danny looked at Steve. "I love you."
"Love you too."
"No, I mean, I love you." Danny emphasized the most important words.
Steve smiled and kissed him. "I know." He kissed Danny again, making certain Danny knew he felt the same.
